The first Gender Equality Report was commissioned by the German federal government in 2008. Its aim was to record, on a scientific basis, the state of gender equality between women and men in Germany, to identify where action was needed, and to formulate concrete recommendations of action. Since then, expert commissions have continuously examined different aspects of gender equality and published their findings in the Gender Equality Reports. The Fourth Gender Equality Report, published in 2025, is entitled “Gender Equality in the Socio-Ecological Transformation” and addresses the challenge of making the transition to a more climate-friendly way of life as gender-equitable as possible. We translated the summary of the expert commission’s report, which condenses the key findings on relevant fields such as housing and energy use, the circular economy, work and time, and mobility and transport planning.
