The historian Dr Barbara von Hindenburg gave this lecture at the international conference “Gender and the State: 100 Years of Struggle for Equal Rights in East-Central Europe”, held in Warsaw at the end of November 2018. In it, she describes the difficult struggle of the first women parliamentarians who campaigned for equality and emancipation in the Prussian State Parliament. Beginning with the introduction of women’s suffrage in 1918, it uses the concrete experiences of individual women members to set out the obstacles and hurdles these women had to overcome on their way to greater equality between the sexes. We translated the text into English.
